We've been making cycling shoes in multiple widths since 1982. Where other brands offer one or two "wide" models as an afterthought, width is fundamental to how we design every shoe. Many models in our range are available in Regular and Wide, while select models offer Narrow for slimmer feet. We don't just stretch a narrow shoe to make it wider — each width has its own last (foot form), engineered from the ground up to match the actual shape of a wider foot.

Find Your Last

The secret to Lake's fit is the last — the 3D foot form around which every shoe is built. We use multiple last shapes, each designed for a different foot profile:

Not sure which last is right for you? Use our Fit Matrix to match your foot measurements to the right shape, or start with our size guide to measure your feet at home.

Why Wide Cycling Shoes Matter

Your foot naturally splays under load — especially when pedalling. With every revolution, your forefoot spreads as it pushes down on the pedal. A shoe that's too narrow compresses the metatarsal heads, pinching nerves, reducing blood flow, and causing the numbness, tingling, and "hot foot" that so many cyclists just accept as normal. It's not normal. It's a shoe that doesn't fit.

Wide cycling shoes give your forefoot room to spread naturally. The result: better blood circulation (no more numb toes after 30 minutes), more power transfer (a stable, spread foot pushes harder than a cramped one), less fatigue (your feet work naturally instead of fighting the shoe), and all-day comfort (ride 6+ hours without foot pain).

Here at Lake, we offer genuine width options across every category: road, MTB, gravel, triathlon, and winter. That's something no other cycling shoe brand can say.

Bunions and Difficult Foot Shapes

If you have bunions, hammer toes, or other foot conditions that make standard cycling shoes painful, start with the CX242 (road) or MX242 (MTB). Both feature segmented uppers with 6 independent zones that wrap around your foot's unique shape without creating pressure points. Read our detailed guide to cycling shoes for bunions and difficult foot shapes.

FAQ

How do I know if I need wide cycling shoes?

If you experience numbness, tingling, hot spots, or pain in the forefoot during or after rides, you likely need a wider shoe. Measure your foot width and compare it to our size chart. Even if you have never worn wide shoes before, your cycling shoes may need to be wider than your everyday shoes — because your feet spread more under pedalling load.

Do wide cycling shoes perform worse than regular?

No. The sole, closure system, and materials are identical between widths. The only difference is the internal volume and shape of the upper. A shoe that fits correctly will always perform better than one that does not, regardless of the width label.

Which Lake shoe has the widest fit?

The CX201 (road) and MX201 (MTB) use our Comfort Plus Last, which has the widest toebox in our range. For maximum adjustability around bunions and bony prominences, the CX242 and MX242 with their 6-zone segmented uppers offer the most accommodating fit.

I have bunions — which Lake shoe should I get?

Start with the CX242 (road) or MX242 (MTB). Read our bunion fitting guide for detailed advice on finding the right shoe for your specific foot shape.

Can I return wide shoes if they do not fit?

Check our customer service page for return policy details. We strongly recommend measuring your feet with our size guide before ordering.
