Specifications

Description

The MXZ21 is designed to be a lighter-weight and more athletic-fitting high-performance inclement weather cycling shoe. Built on a carbon fiber and real rubber sole, it maintains incredible power transfer to the pedal, along with grip and stability on slippery ground conditions. The MXZ21 combines this high-performance sole with a windproof and highly water-resistant upper for foot comfort, while unlimited adjustable speed laces lock your feet in for fast-paced pedal stroke stability.

Sizing Suggestion: For use with winter weight socks we recommend ordering 1-1.5 sizes up from your usual Lake Cycling shoe size.

Last

MX Competition Last – Featuring a larger toe box & tighter heel than the Comfort last and with slightly more overall volume than the Sport last. Exceptionally secure for hard riding/racing with enough room in the toe box to prevent binding when running up inclines or negotiating a hike-a-bike section. Designed for performance riding & racing.

Outsole

Lake's Competition midsole is 100% carbon fiber and is combined with the Mountain Competition real rubber sole, which offers extended protection. The Mountain Competition rubber sole includes larger tread blocks that provide excellent grip on nearly all surfaces. This design ensures a stable and sure-footed cycling shoe suitable for wet weather and various conditions.

Lining

The upper features soft-shell fabric, water-resistant microfiber, and a wicking liner with a seam-taped membrane barrier, which helps make this cycling shoe highly water-resistant and suitable for various conditions. Clarino microfiber provides excellent durability and the suppleness of leather with a significant weight reduction. The upper is then treated with a DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating that prevents the upper from absorbing water. Like all other products with water-resistant functionality, this DWR coating will need to be reapplied using a readily available DWR spray found in the marketplace. Exposure to elements such as rain and mud will eventually wash away this DWR coating, necessitating reapplication when used frequently in those conditions.

Closure

Speed-laces offer durability and fast opening and closing while remaining locked in place. Easily replaceable speed-laces provide worry-free, unlimited, and ultimate customization for an optimal, secure fit and unmatched comfort.

Temperature Rating

Down to 25°F/-4°C

Water Resistance

The uppers are treated with a durable water resistant (DWR) coating that will wear away over time. We recommend reapplying a DWR spray 1-2 times a year for moderate riders and every 2-3 wet rides for daily riders.

Most Asked Questions

Do I need to size up for thick socks?

We suggest sizing up by half a size if you plan to wear thick wool socks. Our Winter Last also provides extra volume in the toe box for warmth.

Are the closures easy to use with gloves?

Yes. Many winter shoes use oversized BOA® dials or pull-tabs that are easy to adjust without removing your gloves.

What cleat systems are these compatible with?

Winter shoes follow the same cleat patterns as our other models—either 3-bolt (road) or 2-bolt (MTB)—depending on the model.

Are these shoes insulated and waterproof?

Our winter models are engineered with varying levels of thermal insulation tailored to specific use conditions, effectively trapping foot warmth while blocking out cold air. Some models feature waterproof membranes with sealed seams, providing an added layer of protection to keep your feet warm and dry. While models with seam-sealed membrane construction offer excellent water resistance, they may not be fully waterproof in extreme wet or 100% submerged conditions.

Are they durable enough for extreme conditions?

Absolutely. Our winter shoes are built tough to handle cold, wet, and abrasive winter riding environments.

Can I use them for snow or fat biking?

Yes. They’re ideal for snow riding and fat biking, with soles that provide grip and uppers that shield against the elements.

Do you offer both road and MTB winter models?

Yes. We offer some winter shoes for both 3-bolt road and 2-bolt off-road pedal systems—so you can ride through winter no matter your setup.
